What About Rules?

13For you were called to be free, brothers and sisters; only don’t use this freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but serve one another through love. 14For the whole law is fulfilled in one statement: Love your neighbor as yourself.  15But if you bite and devour one another, watch out, or you will be consumed by one another.

Galatians 5:13-15

If everyone gets to do what they want, then will nothing get done?

We build rules and policies because someone does something wrong. In order to make sure this does not happen again, a policy is written. A memo is sent. And everyone must fall in line.

This way we can bite and devour everyone who makes a mistake.

The 10 Commandments were not God’s way of keeping us in line.

The 10 Commandments were to show us how to love one another. If we love God first, then we can love each other better. As we love God, our desire is to love others as we want to be loved.

You know…

We don’t want to be adultered against…so don’t commit adultery.
We don’t want to be killed (physically or emotionally)…so don’t murder each other.
We don’t want to be cheated and stolen and lied to…so don’t cheat and steal and lie.

Basic stuff.

God designed us for life. He knows exactly what gives us life and what takes life away. And he knows us loving each other is how we give and get life.

Instead of making rules because people do things wrong. Any rule made should only have one “why”…

Love one another.

Expense reports need to be turned in on time because someone else has a job to do.

Return policies are based upon you thinking about yourself in the same position.

Benefits packages do not just have the corner office in mind, but everyone’s office…and home…in mind.

As the leader, you have freedom. Freedom to do whatever you want. It is your idea, your money, your business on the line.

So utilize your freedom as the leader to lead out in serving one another. You’ll be amazed at what happens when you have an army of people focused on one task…

Love one another. Inside and outside your organization.
